On the south-westerly tip of Scotland sits Portpatrick, whose harbour is a focal point of this small village. Historically a thriving fishing community, it continues to house a fleet of fishing boats to the present day. It is one of only 30 Scottish harbours that maintains a lifeboat permanently “on call”. Up until the late 19th century, it was an important port for ships between Scotland and Ireland. Portpatrick also marks the western end of the Southern Upland Way, a coast-to-coast walk across Scotland.
