Kilchurn Castle, now mostly a ruin, was built around 1450, with alterations being made well into the 1600s. It was built on a small island at the edge of Loch Awe, though the water level was altered in 1817 and the land on which the castle sits is now connected to the mainland. The castle was finally abandoned by the end of the 18th century, and was subsequently damaged by a severe storm. Despite its ruinous state, modern stairs allow access to the towers, and it remains a popular tourist site.
