Scotland's scenery is famous because of its diversity. There are three different areas: the Highlands, Midland Valley and the Southern Uplands. Each area has a distinct view which we aim to capture in the calendar.

There are 277 Munros - mountains over 3,000ft - in Scotland. A number of these are ancient volcanoes, which makes for beautiful scenery. Even in Edinburgh we have Arthur's Seat and the Mound, ancient volcanoes that create the backdrop for the city.

Water of Leith, Edinburgh

Of the 787 islands around the coast, only 62 are more than three square miles in area. There are also many stunning deserted beaches and superb lochs, including sea lochs on the West Coast. And, of course, the long coastline water is an integral part of the scenery. Human intervention has also created some beautiful cities.

We at The Scotsman Calendar work with the photographers and The Scotsman photographic editorial team to select photographs that show this diversity. We understand how important the calendar is to those Scots living around the world and to people who have never been who want to see true Scotland. The online prize draw is your chance to also give us feedback on your favourite pictures.

Glen Etive, Highlands
